Product description examples that sell, by product type

A product description that sells names what the product does, proves it with specifics, and answers the doubts that stop a purchase. The eight examples below show that pattern for different product types. Each has a weak version, a stronger one, and the reason it works.

All products and specs in these examples are made up for illustration. Replace them with your own facts.

What makes a product description sell?

A description sells when it helps a customer decide without asking you a question. That means four things: what it is for, the details that decide fit, what could go wrong, and how to care for it.

Baymard Institute's 2021 research on product descriptions found that materials and ingredients helped many users find suitable products. It also recommends labeled dimensions with units and exact compatibility details. Weak copy skips these and uses adjectives instead.

Two other rules apply to every example below. Put the most important details first. For product feeds, Google Merchant Center's description guidance says to list the most important details in the first 160 to 500 characters. The same order works on your product page. Also write facts you can prove, which the last section covers. Product pages are one of the first fixes in Grovlix's guide to e-commerce growth basics.

Product description examples by product type

Clothing: lead with fit, fabric and care

Pattern: fit, fabric, care. Customers cannot try the shirt on, so answer fit and feel in words.

Before: Our stylish linen shirt is perfect for any occasion. Made from quality fabric. Available in many colors.

After: A relaxed-fit shirt in 100% linen, cut 2 in (5 cm) longer at the back so it stays tucked in. The model is 5 ft 9 in (175 cm) and wears a size M. Machine wash cold, tumble dry low. Linen softens with each wash, so expect a looser drape after a month.

The stronger version gives a measurement, a model reference and care steps. The weak one gives three adjectives.

Skincare: list ingredients, texture and use

Pattern: ingredients, texture, how to use. Do not promise results you cannot prove.

Before: Our miracle serum erases wrinkles and gives you glowing skin in days.

After: A water-light serum with niacinamide and hyaluronic acid. It is a thin gel with no fragrance and leaves no sticky film. Use 3 drops on clean skin, morning and night, before moisturizer. The full ingredient list is below. Patch-test on your inner arm first.

The weak version makes claims that need evidence. The stronger one describes what the customer will see and do.

Electronics: translate the spec, then state compatibility

Pattern: spec in plain terms, exact compatibility, what is not included.

Before: Amazing USB-C charger with great speed. Works with all your devices.

After: A 65 W USB-C wall charger with two ports. One port gives up to 65 W. With both ports in use, power splits to 45 W and 20 W. It charges iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 models and USB-C laptops that charge at 65 W or less. The cable is not included.

"All your devices" invites questions. A model list and a clear exclusion answer them.

Home decor: show size in plain terms

Pattern: dimensions with units, a scale comparison, one honest note about variation.

Before: A beautiful large ceramic vase for your home.

After: A matte ceramic vase, 14 in (36 cm) tall and 6 in (15 cm) wide at the base, about the height of a wine bottle plus a hand. It holds 12 stems and is glazed inside, so it holds water. Each piece is hand-finished, so color varies slightly.

Customers cannot hold the item. A scale comparison and both unit systems do that for them, as Baymard's research recommends.

Food and coffee: say how it tastes and what it contains

Pattern: taste, best use, allergens.

Before: Delicious coffee beans, freshly roasted.

After: Medium-roast Colombian beans, roasted to order and shipped within 2 days. They taste like milk chocolate and orange peel, and suit espresso and moka pots. A 12 oz (340 g) bag. Contains no allergens, but it is packed in a facility that also handles tree nuts.

Taste notes and a brew method help the customer choose. The allergen line is a safety detail, so check your local labeling rules.

Jewelry: be exact about material and size

Pattern: material, dimensions against something familiar, what it contains.

Before: An elegant necklace, a perfect gift.

After: A sterling silver (925) pendant on an 18 in (46 cm) chain. The pendant is 0.6 in (15 mm) across, about the width of a small fingernail. It contains no nickel. Ships in a gift box with a polishing cloth.

A buyer of a gift worries about quality and size. Both answers are in the first two sentences. Customers cannot try the piece on, so both unit systems and the metal stamp spare them a question.

Personalized products: explain the process and lead time

Pattern: what the customer controls, proof step, timeline.

Before: A personalized mug, a great gift.

After: An 11 oz (325 ml) ceramic mug printed with your text, up to 2 lines of 20 characters each. We email a proof within 24 hours and print only after you approve it. Your mug ships 3 to 5 business days after approval. Hand wash recommended.

Customers worry about typos and delays. The process answers both and sets expectations. Also state who pays if a typo slips through after approval, so nobody argues later.

Pet products: give size guidance and safety notes

Pattern: size range, safety note, cleaning.

Before: A durable dog toy your pet will love.

After: A rubber chew toy for dogs 25 to 55 lb (11 to 25 kg). The hollow center holds treats. Supervise your dog while it chews, and take the toy away if it cracks. Dishwasher safe, top rack.

"Durable" is a claim anyone can make. A weight range and a safety instruction show you thought about the dog. A range such as 25 to 55 lb also beats "for medium dogs", because "medium" means different things to different owners.

How do you write descriptions for a whole catalog?

Use one template, fill it with facts, and change only what differs by product. A good template has four parts:

  1. One opening sentence: what the product is, who it is for, and its main benefit.
  2. Three to five highlights: material, size, key feature, what is included.
  3. One line on fit, compatibility or sizing.
  4. One line on care, warranty or what is not included.

Fill the parts from the supplier's spec sheet, then rewrite them in your own words. Keep each sentence to one fact. A customer scanning a phone screen should find size, material and care in seconds.

To get a first draft from a product name and a list of specs, use Grovlix's free AI product description generator. It asks for the name, keywords, features, audience, style and length, and returns plain text you can paste into any platform's editor. The page notes a daily limit per visitor.

What should a product description never say?

Never claim anything you cannot prove, and never copy a supplier's text word for word. The Federal Trade Commission's advertising guide for small businesses lists three basic principles. Advertising must be truthful and non-deceptive. Advertisers must have evidence for their claims. Advertising cannot be unfair. The guide adds that the law requires proof before the ad runs. Advertising rules vary by country, so check the current rules where you sell.

That rule covers words like "clinically proven", "cures", and "lasts forever". Each of those claims needs evidence behind it. If you cannot show it, describe the product instead.

If you also send products to Google Merchant Center, its specification says to describe only the product. Leave out links, price, sale dates and shipping details.

How do you check a description before you publish it?

Read it on your phone and answer five questions. If any answer is no, edit the description before it goes live.

  • Does the first sentence say what the product is and who it is for?
  • Can a customer find size, material and care in a few seconds?
  • Can you prove every claim, and does it describe only this product?
  • Do the details match the product title, the images and the landing page? Google Merchant Center asks for consistency between them.
  • Would a customer know what is and is not in the box?

Ask someone who has never seen the product to read it and tell you what it is. If they get it wrong, the description is unclear.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a product description be?

There is no fixed length. Cover use, size or fit, materials and care, then stop. Simple products often need two short paragraphs, and complex products need more. Put the key details first. Google Merchant Center advises listing the most important details in the first 160 to 500 characters of a description, and it allows up to 5,000 characters.

Can I use the manufacturer's product description?

You can, but rewrite it. Other stores publish the same text, so your page gives customers nothing different. The Federal Trade Commission's small-business advertising guide also advises merchants not to just repeat what a manufacturer says. Ask for the proof behind its claims before the ad runs.

What details help reduce product returns?

The details customers need to judge fit and suitability: materials or ingredients, clearly labeled dimensions with units, and exact compatibility. Baymard Institute's 2021 research recommends materials and ingredients, labeled dimensions with a second unit system, and explicit model numbers instead of a model series. Add care instructions and what the box includes.

Can AI write product descriptions?

Yes, as a first draft. AI tools can turn a product name and a list of specs into readable copy. They cannot know your product's quirks, so check every fact and add your own details before you publish. Grovlix's free generator works this way: you enter the specs, it drafts text, and you edit it.
